RemoteSensingOfTheAtmosphereI. Meteorological Aspects (15h, Ngo Duc Thanh) Lectures: 9h; tutorial work: 6h Description: This section provides basic knowledge of the applications of remote sensing techniques in meteorological aspects: atmospheric soundings, clouds classification, convective storms, quantitative precipitation estimation, water vapor imagery, synoptic scale meteorology such as fronts, cyclones. Besides theoretical lectures, tutorial class would help students be able to use satellite data to monitor and interpret various meteorological phenomena. 1. Introduction (1h) History and role of satellite meteorology Meteorological satellite orbits 2. Atmospheric soundings (2h + 2h TP) Sounding theory Infrared sounding Microwave sounding Retrieval methods 3. Clouds and Water Vapor (2h +2h TP) Cloud classification Principles of the remote sensing of clouds and water vapor Cloud and Water vapor patterns 4. Precipitation (2h +2h TP) Principles of precipitation remote sensing IR methods Passive microwave emission methods Passive microwave scattering methods Radar methods Integrated methods Satellite precipitation products 5. Phenomena of synoptic scale and others (2h) fronts cyclone others II. Observing the composition of the atmosphere from space (15h, Gilles Foret) Lectures: 11h ; tutorial work/mini project : 4 h Description: The purpose of this lesson is to describe the applications of remote sensing techniques to observe the composition of earth atmosphere. 1. Atmospheric composition - 1h 2. Stratospheric ozone and ozone hole -2h Historic and current situation Description of satellite/instrument and products to sense stratospheric composition 3. Greenhouse gases -2h Sources and atmospheric loading Remote sensing applications to GHG 4. Reactive gases -2h Air quality context Recent remote sensing application to atmospheric pollution 5. Aerosols -2h sources and role in the atmospheric system State-of-the-art of aerosol remote sensing 6. Monitoring systems for atmospheric composition -2h Mini project (4h) Use of remote sensing products to investigate south Asian atmospheric composition chararcteristics |
